Mattress Care in the Kerala Monsoon (and When to Replace Your Mattress)
Share
A good mattress is a long-term investment, and in Kerala the monsoon is its biggest test. Months of humidity can lead to dampness, musty smells and even fungus if a mattress isn't cared for. The good news is that a few simple habits can keep your mattress fresh and extend its life by years.
8 monsoon mattress care tips
- Use a mattress protector. A breathable, waterproof protector is your first line of defence against spills, sweat and moisture. Wash it regularly.
- Keep the room ventilated. Open windows on dry days and use a fan to keep air moving. Stale, damp air is what encourages mould.
- Don't put the mattress on the floor. Floors hold moisture. Use a cot or bed base with slats so air can circulate underneath.
- Air it out on sunny days. When the sun comes out, strip the bed and let the mattress breathe for a few hours. Avoid long periods in harsh direct sun, which can damage some foams.
- Rotate regularly. Turn your mattress head-to-foot every 3 months so it wears evenly. If it's a reversible model, flip it too.
- Vacuum the surface. A monthly vacuum removes dust and dust mites.
- Deal with spills quickly. Blot (don't rub) with a dry cloth, use a little mild soap and water if needed, then let it dry completely before making the bed.
- Use a dehumidifier if possible. In very damp rooms, a dehumidifier makes a big difference to mattresses, wardrobes and walls.
Features that help in the monsoon
If you are buying a new mattress, look for anti-fungal or anti-microbial treatment, breathable knitted fabric, side ventilators and removable washable covers. Mattresses such as the Nilkamal Sleep Nuvorest (anti-fungal) and Max ICEFOAM (washable cover) are designed with this in mind. Read more in our guide to the best mattress for Kerala's climate.
How often should you replace your mattress?
Most mattresses last around 7 to 10 years, depending on the material, quality and how well they are cared for. Signs that it's time for a new one:
- Visible sagging, dips or lumps
- You wake up stiff or with back or neck pain
- You can feel springs or the mattress has become noisy
- Allergies or a persistent musty smell
- You sleep better anywhere else than in your own bed
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove a musty smell from my mattress?
Sprinkle baking soda over the surface, leave it for a few hours (ideally in a well-ventilated room), then vacuum it off. Repeat if needed, and air the mattress on a dry day.
Can mould on a mattress be cleaned?
Small surface spots can sometimes be cleaned, but mould that has spread inside the mattress is very hard to remove completely. For health reasons, a heavily affected mattress is best replaced.
